Fiji police are currently conducting an investigation into the unauthorized release of an explicit video featuring former cabinet minister Lynda Tabuya. Tabuya, who previously held the position of Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, has formally reported the incident to the police’s cybercrime unit, labeling the distribution of this private video as a severe form of cyberbullying.
The video has sparked significant controversy, leading Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to remove Tabuya from her Cabinet role, declaring that this action was in the best interest of the public. The footage reportedly involves Tabuya and her husband, resulting in widespread backlash and scandal.
In her statement, Tabuya has characterized the leak as a manifestation of gender-based violence, emphasizing that it highlights the serious issue of online violence faced by many women and girls in Fiji. She advocates for the recognition that sharing private videos between consenting adults in a relationship should not be stigmatized, reiterating it was her and her husband’s private matter.
Deputy Police Commissioner Livai Driu confirmed that cyberbullying is a significant offense, emphasizing that the police aim to identify the individuals responsible for the video’s circulation, as this is not only against the law but also a violation of human rights and personal privacy.
