Amendments to an overtime and time off in lieu (TOIL) policy have been implemented to improve service delivery at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital’s (CWMH) radiology and pharmacy departments. This decision was confirmed by Parmesh Chand, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Civil Service, who stated that the changes were made following consultations with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
Chand emphasized that the situation had been resolved satisfactorily, reiterating the commitment to prioritizing public interests in service delivery efforts. Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary of the Health Ministry, expressed gratitude for the responsive actions taken by the Ministry of Civil Service and assured that the outcome would be communicated to health facilities and staff affected by the issue.
However, Judith Kotobalavu, general secretary of the Fiji Public Service Association (FPSA), raised concerns regarding the issues faced, highlighting a perceived lack of strategic oversight and urging the ministry to focus on effectively managing its overtime budget instead of outsourcing critical healthcare services to private providers. She affirmed that the FPSA would continue advocating for fair compensation and the maintenance of essential public services.
This development reflects a cooperative effort among government ministries to address concerns and enhance public healthcare services. It serves as a reminder of the importance of strategic planning and investment in public health systems, ensuring that the dedicated public servants are adequately supported in their vital work.
In conclusion, while challenges remain in the public healthcare system, the prompt response to policy amendments demonstrates a commitment to refining service delivery and protecting the welfare of both healthcare workers and the community they serve.
