The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced that a replacement lift for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) is expected to arrive next month. This development comes in response to the prolonged issues surrounding the non-functional patient lift at the hospital, which has raised concerns among the public on social media about its usability.
According to a statement from the ministry, the lift in question, located in the West Wing of CWMH, has been out of service for a while, significantly disrupting patient care. The lift, originally purchased from OTIS Elevator Company in New Zealand, has been in use for over 15 years. Engineers from the company are currently on-site attempting to restore its functionality, while the Ministry is collaborating with other relevant agencies to address the underlying problems.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Ministry indicated that in 2023 it acknowledged the need for upgrades to the aging lifts at the hospital. With funding approved by the Government, efforts are underway to procure replacements for all outdated lifts in the facility. The new specialized lifts, which are expected to be crucial for transporting patients, staff, and medical equipment, are scheduled to arrive by February 2025. These lifts will adhere to strict infection control standards, emphasizing the careful planning required for their installation.
The Ministry expressed understanding and sympathy for the frustrations caused by the lift’s malfunction, which has affected patient care. They urged patience from patients, families, and staff as they work diligently to enhance the hospital’s infrastructure.
This announcement not only highlights the Ministry’s commitment to improving healthcare facilities but also reassures the public that measures are being taken to enhance patient care in the long term. By investing in modern solutions and infrastructure, the Ministry aims to provide a more efficient healthcare experience for everyone in the community.
