The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced that a replacement lift for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) is anticipated to arrive next month, which should resolve the persistent issues surrounding the currently non-functional patient lift at the facility.

In recent weeks, community members have expressed their concerns on social media, seeking explanations for the prolonged malfunction of the lift at the hospital. According to the Ministry, the malfunctioning lift, situated in the West Wing of CWMH, has been out of service for an extended period, leading to disruptions in patient care.

The statement from the Ministry revealed that the problematic lift, over 15 years old and originally sourced from the OTIS Elevator Company in New Zealand, is currently undergoing repairs by engineers on-site. The Ministry is collaborating with various agencies, including the Ministry of Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, to address the ongoing issues.

Recognizing the aging condition of the lifts, the Ministry has initiated plans to replace all outdated lifts at CWMH, following the approval of government funding. The new lifts are expected to arrive by February 2025. These modern lifts will be specialized to accommodate patients, medical staff, and essential equipment, such as beds and wheelchairs, while adhering to strict infection control standards. The procurement and installation of these lifts will involve thorough planning.

The Ministry acknowledged the challenges caused by the lift’s failure, which have affected patient care in the impacted ward, and urged patients, their families, and staff to remain patient as improvements to the hospital’s infrastructure are being implemented. The Ministry expressed its commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery across the nation and is actively working to resolve the situation.

This development is a positive step forward for CWMH, as the replacement and modernization of the lift infrastructure will not only improve patient care but also enhance the overall efficiency of hospital services.

Summary: The Ministry of Health is set to replace the malfunctioning lift at Colonial War Memorial Hospital next month, addressing public concerns and aiming for improved patient care. Funding has been approved for the replacement of all outdated lifts by February 2025, which will adhere to modern healthcare standards.
