The Ministry of Health & Medical Services has announced that new replacement lifts for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) are set to arrive next month. This follows ongoing issues with the current non-functional patient lift, which is located in the hospital’s West Wing and has been in use for over fifteen years.
In response to the concerns surrounding the lift, the Ministry is working in collaboration with its contracted suppliers and relevant government agencies, including the Ministry of Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services. They have engaged with the OTIS Elevator Company of New Zealand, which originally supplied the lift. OTIS engineers are currently on-site at CWMH to restore functionality to the existing lift while preparations for the new installations are underway.
Recognizing the necessity for updated infrastructure, the Ministry highlighted that this initiative to replace aging lifts was first identified in 2023, aligning with the government’s approved funding. New hospital lifts are essential for transporting patients, staff, and medical equipment safely and efficiently, adhering to strict infection prevention protocols.
The non-operative lift has caused disruptions in patient care, which has understandably led to frustrations among patients, their families, and hospital staff. The Ministry is requesting patience from all parties as they work diligently to improve healthcare facilities and services across the country.
This initiative not only addresses immediate operational needs but also signifies a commitment to enhance healthcare infrastructure for future demands. With the new lifts arriving soon, CWMH is on track to significantly improve the quality of patient care and overall hospital functionality.
In summary, the arrival of replacement lifts represents a proactive step in modernizing healthcare facilities, ultimately benefitting patients and easing the burden on hospital staff. The Ministry’s efforts illustrate a dedication to enhancing healthcare services, fostering hope that future challenges in the system will be met with timely solutions.
