Police are calling for a collective approach to security following ongoing incidents of vehicle break-ins at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu emphasized that while security officers are stationed to patrol the hospital’s parking areas, it’s vital for both the public and institutions to take shared accountability. He pointed out, “We cannot deploy police officers everywhere in this country. Taking ownership on all of us should be the change of mindset now, rather than leaving everything and blaming the police.”

Hospital staff have expressed growing concerns about the frequency of vehicle damage and thefts occurring within the hospital grounds. One staff member highlighted that the closure of the main Special Outpatients Department parking area for maintenance has forced employees to park along Extension Street, leading to vehicles being targeted almost daily. This troubling trend results in staff returning to find their cars damaged or belongings stolen after lengthy shifts, adding undue stress to an already challenging work environment.

In response to these issues, hospital personnel are advocating for immediate action, including an increased security presence, routine police patrols, and temporary safety measures until a permanent solution for parking can be established. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu previously stated intentions to direct the Medical Superintendent to investigate these incidents and implement necessary measures to ensure the safety of both hospital staff and their vehicles.

By emphasizing the importance of community involvement in security, there is hope that a collaborative effort can lead to a safer environment for hospital personnel and patients alike, ultimately fostering a sense of safety and well-being within the community.
