An ongoing investigation into the death of Marika Radua, a farmer from Naviavia Settlement in Cakaudrove, while in custody at the Savusavu Police Station on November 5, is expected to yield valuable insights for the Fiji Police Force. Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua addressed the matter during his visit to Labasa, stressing that such incidents should not happen and emphasizing the importance of the welfare of individuals in custody.

Mr. Tikoduadua stated that the investigation highlights the need for improved infrastructure within police facilities. He noted concerns regarding the mental state of detainees and advocated for enhanced training and awareness among police personnel to better recognize the needs of individuals in their care. He acknowledged the confined nature of police holding areas but reiterated that the safety and security of detainees must be paramount.

Currently, the investigation is underway, focusing on the circumstances surrounding Mr. Radua’s alleged assault by another detainee, which led to a critical medical situation requiring transfer to Savusavu Sub-divisional Hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival.

This tragic incident presents an opportunity for the Fiji Police Force to reflect and improve, potentially leading to better practices and training that could prevent similar occurrences in the future. By prioritizing the health, safety, and well-being of all individuals in custody, the police can work towards fostering a more humane and effective system of justice.

In summary, while this situation is heartbreaking, it also serves as a critical turning point for reform within the policing system in Fiji. Such reflection and commitment to improve can lead to enhanced safety measures and a more compassionate approach towards individuals in confinement.
