The recent investigation into the death of a detainee at Savusavu Police Station in Cakaudrove on November 5 is poised to offer vital lessons for the Fiji Police Force. Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, addressed this issue during his visit to Labasa, calling attention to the incident that he stated should never have occurred.
“We need to prioritize the welfare and well-being of individuals in our custody,” Tikoduadua asserted, acknowledging the role infrastructure plays in ensuring safety. He noted that concerns had been raised regarding the mental health of the alleged assailant, underscoring the necessity for enhanced training and education among law enforcement personnel.
“While I do not place blame on the police, it’s clear that we must create safer environments for those detained,” he emphasized. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of specialized training for police officers to recognize and manage individuals who may present risks to themselves or others.
The investigation is still underway following the tragic incident involving Marika Radua, a farmer from Naviavia Settlement, who was reportedly assaulted by another detainee and subsequently pronounced dead upon arrival at the Savusavu Sub-divisional Hospital.
This situation not only sheds light on the challenges faced by the justice system but also presents an opportunity for necessary changes that can enhance the care and safety of individuals within police custody, ultimately leading to improved practices and policies that benefit the entire community. Through this incident, there’s hope that systemic improvements can be made to prevent such tragedies from repeating in the future.
