Cultural Ties: Fijian Families Reunite After Generations

In a celebration of traditional Fijian customs, an old relationship is being rekindled. This gathering is a reminder of the heritage of the hosts from the past. It is often held for families to meet, especially after several years apart.

Recently, the MacDonald family from Germany reunited with the Vunivalu clan from Natalaira, Dawasamu, Tailevu, after several years. Isei Turaga, the leader of the Navunivalu clan, emphasized that they have been maintaining connections for over a century. He shared that even before the arrival of missionaries in the 1800s, a Natalaira woman named Losana Soli had established a connection with a British gentleman who brought people from India to Fiji.

This story has been passed down through generations and is still known among those who have survived. One descendant of Losana currently resides in Australia and wishes to learn about other connections in Fiji, indicating that this history continues to resonate.

Last year, another Natalaira woman from Navesau spoke about seeking connections with their families. More gatherings have occurred, especially in the Vunivalu clan territory, as family ties and bonds are being rekindled.

During the 1800s, clans were less organized than today, but now families are categorized into groups and sub-clans. Isei noted that many young descendants are increasingly aware of the original relationships and want to engage with them. Families are traveling from New Zealand, England, Canada, Australia, and other countries to participate in this gathering.

Elder family members are also attending this wonderful event. This marks a significant occasion for those who cherish their heritage, and it encourages a deeper understanding of where they hail from.
