Adi Tulia Nacola exemplifies the rise of young iTaukei women in the business sector. An accomplished serial entrepreneur, she has successfully ventured into various industries, including furniture making and boat building, in addition to authoring three novels. Her latest achievement is in film production, with her debut short film titled “Bubu Belo,” created in collaboration with Fiji-based film label Bure Productions.

“Bubu Belo” is a 25-minute film that is presented in the iTaukei language. It follows the story of Bubu and Tamara, two characters living in a small wooden cottage by the sea. Shot in Verevere Village, Ra, Nacola’s hometown, the film portrays Bubu teaching Tamara essential survival skills, such as fishing and growing food, while emphasizing the importance of independence and respect for the land.

The narrative takes a twist with the arrival of an unexpected visitor from their past, forcing Bubu to confront a challenging choice. This storyline highlights a recurring issue faced by indigenous communities: the balance between embracing urban opportunities and maintaining a connection to their land and traditions.

Nacola passionately advocates for storytelling and the transmission of traditional knowledge within families. Her film aims to strengthen the bond between elders and youth, bridging the gap for those who may not yet speak the iTaukei language. “Bubu Belo” underscores the vital relationship between generations and promotes storytelling as a means of imparting values of respect for each other and the land.

The premiere of “Bubu Belo” will take place at Film Fiji’s office in Suva next week and will be followed by screenings in various villages and communities throughout Ra. These events, sponsored by Film Fiji, are intended to highlight the significance of cultural identity and belonging, allowing communities to reflect on their roots as they progress into the future.

Event details:
– Premiere of “Bubu Belo” by Adi Tulia Nacola
– Location: Film Fiji (Ground Floor, Civic House, Suva)
– Date: Thursday, January 16, 2025

This film not only showcases the talents of a young entrepreneur but also serves as a powerful medium for cultural preservation and restoration of identity. It is a hopeful reminder of the importance of community, heritage, and the stories that define us all.
