In a vibrant display of cultural pride and unity, the island of Lakeba came alive with traditional chants and rituals to celebrate the installation of Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara as the Tui Lau, Sau ni Vanua o Lau. At the Ministry of Finance in Suva, staff members expressed their pride in their heritage as they donned their traditional attire, reflecting a heartfelt connection to their roots. Fane Tulele from Nuku, Moala, noted the importance of allowing the younger generation to witness such significant cultural ceremonies, stating, “It’s a proud moment.” Similarly, civil servant Makereta Tuima from Oneata called it a revival of culture.

Biuvakacegu Dobui, from Nadroga with maternal links to Kabara, highlighted how this occasion transformed her understanding of family narratives regarding the installation customs, providing a living connection to her ancestors.
