The Vice Chancellor of the University of Fiji, Professor Shaista Shameem, has addressed the importance of human values and selflessness amid global uncertainty during a graduation ceremony for 283 students in Lautoka. She emphasized the university’s distinctive educational system, based on the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha’s philosophy, which promotes life-long learning and supports national development.
Professor Shameem highlighted that the APS education framework provides a comprehensive approach to education from childhood through adulthood, equipping individuals to contribute effectively to nation-building. She expressed gratitude for the longstanding governmental support that has bolstered the university’s independence and success, noting that it has produced over 7,000 graduates who positively impact their communities.
In her speech, Professor Shameem urged graduates to approach the unpredictable world with kindness, integrity, and wisdom, reflecting on the challenges surrounding conflicts, economic disparities, and food security issues. She encouraged them to remember their responsibilities to the world and to maintain a perspective of gratitude towards what they owe society.
This year’s ceremony echoes sentiments expressed by leaders in various educational institutions, underscoring the importance of quality education and resilience in the face of societal changes. The Prime Minister of Fiji, Sitiveni Rabuka, similarly advised students at Fiji National University to equip themselves for future challenges through education, highlighting that change is a constant and should be embraced with optimism.
The emphasis on human values and continuing education is particularly relevant in today’s volatile global context, encouraging graduates to become thoughtful leaders who contribute positively to society.
