A vibrant food market event is currently taking place in Suva, featuring a variety of businesses promoting local cuisine as part of the Adi Senitoa celebration. Nemani Saronicava, the leader of a food business from Namacu, Koro, Lomaiviti, noted that after experiencing difficulties two years ago, they are returning to their roots to utilize land for business support.
The business, known as Crave Crazy Fijian Delicacy, has been thriving for five years and is prominently featured in Suva’s large market. Saronicava mentioned that this venture has been crucial for supporting their families as they recover from past challenges.
Current food prices range from $5 to $20, with offerings reflecting the local economy and supporting both consumers and vendors. The products sold are primarily sourced from nearby villages, contributing to the local supply chain.
Dishes such as Kokoda, vuaka, lovo, seafood, and more are available for attendees to sample and purchase. Arieta Ravula, a delegate selected by the Fiji Arts Council, emphasizes the flourishing nature of local small businesses, highlighting her own venture that showcases handmade goods.
At 61 years old and hailing from Namata, Bau, Tailevu, Ravula has been running her business for three years, noting significant growth and support through the current market initiative.
She sells a range of handcrafted items, including billfolds, laptop bags, and cosmetic cases, with prices varying from $10 to $60. Ravula’s success in sales during the event has demonstrated a promising outlook for her business, reporting earnings of over $1,000.
Participants are optimistic about the ongoing market activities, which not only provide economic opportunities but also strengthen community ties. Ravula expressed gratitude for being part of this initiative that underscores the importance of supporting local artisans and businesses.
