With the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season fast approaching, the Crusaders have announced their impressive 38-player squad. Among the new additions are eight players receiving full-time contracts for the first time, along with a strong lineup of seasoned Crusaders and All Blacks returning to the fold.

As the team prepares to make their final season at Apollo Projects Stadium, excitement is building among fans and players alike. This season marks a significant moment as the team transitions to the brand-new One New Zealand Stadium in the heart of the city. Fans are encouraged to be part of this historic farewell, celebrating the stadium that has been a fortress for the team, contributing to their remarkable achievement of seven consecutive titles.

Head Coach Rob Penney expressed confidence in his squad’s potential following a tough 2024 season. “We’ve got a great group, and all the coaches are looking forward to getting our hands on them and preparing together here at Rugby Park,” he stated. Rob highlighted the diverse mix of experienced players and youthful talent that the team boasts this year.

An important leadership update was shared as well, with Penney confirming that Scott Barrett will not be taking on captaincy duties for the upcoming season. Details about his successor will be revealed later in the year.

Among the notable new signings is James O’Connor, who brings nearly two decades of playing experience in the pivotal 10 position. The spotlight will also be on Kyle Preston, who recently led the Wellington Lions to victory in the Bunnings Warehouse NPC as their starting halfback. Young talent Aki Tuivailala joins the outside backs, promising to make a significant impact following his experiences with Waikato and the NZ U20s.

Additionally, Xavier Saifoloi adds strength to the loose forwards alongside All Blacks Ethan Blackadder and Christian Lio-Willie. The squad also welcomes several promising players who have graduated from the Crusaders Academy, such as Kershawl Sykes-Martin, Antonio Shalfoon, Seb Calder, and Fletcher Anderson, reflecting the club’s commitment to developing homegrown talent.

Fans are encouraged to get involved this season as memberships are now available, and tickets for pre-season matches are selling quickly.

In essence, the Crusaders’ strong and varied squad is poised for a competitive season, fueled by a blend of seasoned professionals and promising newcomers. As they bid farewell to their current home, there’s a palpable sense of optimism and anticipation for what this new chapter holds. The union of experience and youthful exuberance will surely provide thrilling performances for all supporters this upcoming season.
