With just under 100 days remaining until the commencement of the Super Rugby Pacific season, the Crusaders are excited to announce their 38-player squad for the 2025 competition. Among the lineup, eight players will be stepping into full-time contracts for the first time, adding a mix of fresh talent alongside a strong group of returning Crusaders and All Blacks.
As the team prepares for this significant season at Apollo Projects Stadium—its last full season before moving to the brand-new One New Zealand Stadium—fans are encouraged to participate in celebrating a venue that has been instrumental in securing seven consecutive titles.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Rob Penney, the Crusaders aim to rebound from a tough 2024 season. Penney expressed his optimism about the team, highlighting the depth and blend of experience and youth within the squad.
“We’ve got a great group, and all the coaches are looking forward to getting our hands on them and preparing together here at Rugby Park,” Penney commented. “We’re excited to see what this group can do and build off our 2024 season.”
Notably, Scott Barrett will not return as captain for the upcoming season, with further announcements regarding his successor expected later this year.
Key new signings include experienced playmaker James O’Connor at flyhalf, who brings nearly two decades of professional experience to the squad. Fans will also be eager to see Kyle Preston, who played a pivotal role in the Wellington Lions’ recent NPC victory as starting halfback.
The addition of Aki Tuivailala to the outside backs roster brings exciting prospects; the 20-year-old has showcased his abilities with Waikato and the New Zealand U20 team, likely contributing significant momentum on the field. Moreover, Xavier Saifoloi joins the loose forwards, set to collaborate with established players such as All Black Ethan Blackadder and Christian Lio-Willie, further strengthening the team.
The Crusaders welcome several players who have earned full-time positions after impressing during their Super Rugby debuts, underscoring the success of their Academy talent pathway.
As anticipation builds for the new season, supporters are reminded that memberships are available, and tickets for pre-season games are quickly selling. This season promises not just competitive rugby but also a celebration of a legacy as fans prepare to bid farewell to a cherished venue.
With such promising talent joining the ranks and the team’s commitment to improving from last season, fans can look forward to an exciting and historic year for the Crusaders.
