The Ministry of Education has recognized that inadequate school infrastructure is significantly hampering the ability of schools to ensure Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro highlighted concerns about the Nabua Primary School, where students are currently learning in unsafe conditions.
Radrodro noted that the issues at Nabua stem from a building project initiated by previous management that remains unfinished. He expressed the ministry’s commitment to collaborating with the current management to find a way to complete the construction. “If they need assistance from Government, they need to request through the normal process from the Ministry of Education, and we can see how best we assist in completing the incomplete building,” he stated.
The situation is critical, as many classrooms at Nabua Primary feature deteriorating roofs and windows without blades, creating potential hazards for students. The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has also been involved, confirming that a team visited the school on November 4 and was expected to release a report soon after.
Despite multiple inquiries regarding the OHS report, the ministry has not yet provided an update, raising concerns about the pace of addressing these safety issues.
This situation highlights the urgent need for infrastructure improvements in schools, reflecting a broader challenge faced in the education sector. However, there is hope that through collaboration between government ministries and school managements, prompt actions can be taken to enhance the learning environment for students. Ensuring safer school facilities not only protects students’ health but also creates a more conducive atmosphere for learning.
Summary: The Ministry of Education has acknowledged dangerous conditions at Nabua Primary School due to incomplete infrastructure. The Education Minister aims to collaborate with current management to address these safety concerns and improve the situation for students. The involvement of the Minister of Employment further emphasizes the commitment to resolving OHS issues in schools.
