Around 1,500 passengers aboard the Queen Elizabeth Cruise liner celebrated the New Year in Suva City. The ship arrived in Suva early on New Year’s Day, bringing tourists primarily from Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Despite some unforeseen events during their journey, the passengers experienced a vibrant start to 2025. One tourist joyfully recounted their first impressions of Suva, expressing amazement at the city’s transformation since their last visit 65 years ago.
Prior to docking in Suva, the cruise liner made a stop in Lautoka on New Year’s Eve where passengers revelled in a lively midnight celebration featuring fireworks, traditional Fijian music, and cultural performances.
During their brief but activity-filled stay in Suva, the Fiji Police Force set up information booths to assist the tourists. Visitors also enjoyed a shopping spree at Jack’s of Fiji, one of the city’s well-known stores, where staff welcomed them warmly.
The arrival of a major cruise liner during the holiday season showcases Fiji’s attractiveness as a travel destination and enhances the local economy. This New Year experience reflects the enduring spirit of celebration and hospitality that the Fijian people are known for, making it a memorable occasion for all involved.
Overall, the events represent a hopeful sign for tourism recovery and a strong beginning for the new year in Fiji.
