The final day of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) meeting focused on critical social issues affecting the iTaukei community, including violence against women, drug use, and school dropouts. GCC chair Ratu Viliame Seruvakula highlighted the urgency of addressing these challenges, noting that Fiji has alarmingly high rates of domestic violence and violence against women.
During the meeting, council members delivered poignant speeches, urging collective action to tackle these pressing problems. Ratu Viliame pointed out that the infiltration of drugs into schools is particularly troubling, further complicating the issue of school dropouts. He remarked on the disparity in educational achievements, citing that only 30 percent of iTaukei students graduate from medical programs compared to 60 percent from other ethnic groups.
