Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representing the Labasa Divisional Hospital, earned the Best Sarong award at the recent Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North’s Global Night. The event took place on Monday night at Subrail Park in Labasa, where the 22-year-old showcased a unique sarong that told a story of organic farming.
Her innovative design began with a stylish twist around the neck, symbolizing a journey grounded in sustainable agriculture. This creative approach not only won her the award but also highlighted the importance of eco-friendly farming practices in an engaging manner.
Waqaniburotu, who works in the pathology department at Labasa Divisional Hospital, noted that the knot in her sarong represented a firm commitment to caring for the earth and promoting sustainable farming. She explained how the sarong could easily transition from a farming environment to a fashionable beach look.
“My headpiece, crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, symbolizes the fruits and vegetables from organic farms,” she stated. Expressing her surprise at winning, she added, “I was almost in tears, especially since all the other contestants had stunning sarongs as well.”
Collaborating with her sister to create the sarong, she emphasized the bond of sisterhood and the rewards of hard work. Waqaniburotu is in her final year at Fiji National University, studying medical laboratory science. She has roots in Makadru, Matuku, Lau, and maternal ties to Taviya Village in Ovalau. Her campaign promotes the revitalization of the North through organic farming.
“I believe organic farming is key to a healthier and more sustainable future, and I am truly passionate about it,” she said. She is one of nine contestants competing for the Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North title this Saturday.
