In a remarkable showcase of cultural and environmental pride, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representing the Labasa Divisional Hospital, secured the Best Sarong award during the Global Night of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.

The 22-year-old captivated the audience on Monday night at Subrail Park in Labasa, presenting a sarong that told a story rooted in the principles of organic farming. The garment began with an elegant twist around the neck, symbolizing the beginnings of a journey based on sustainable farming practices.

Adi Marica’s innovative presentation not only earned her top honors but also highlighted the importance of sustainable agriculture through a visually stunning representation. A representative from the pathology department at Labasa Divisional Hospital explained that the knot in the sarong reflected a strong commitment to caring for the environment and promoting sustainable farming.

“After a productive day at the farm, the sarong easily transforms into a stylish beach outfit with a knot just below the bust,” Ms. Waqaniburotu remarked. “It exudes relaxed sophistication, ideal for enjoying the coastal breeze.”

Her headpiece, crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, symbolized the produce from the organic farm. “I was in disbelief when I won the award and nearly cried, especially since all the other contestants had beautiful sarongs,” she shared. “My sister and I made the sarong together, which represents our sisterly bond, and it shows that hard work can pay off.”

Adi Marica is in her final year at Fiji National University, studying for a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. She originates from Makadru, Matuku, Lau, and has maternal connections to Taviya Village in Ovalau. Her advocacy emphasizes the revitalization of the North through organic farming.

“I am passionate about organic farming, as I believe it paves the way for a healthier and more sustainable future,” she stated. Adi Marica is one of nine contestants competing for the Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North title this Saturday.
