In a remarkable exhibition of cultural and environmental awareness, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representing Labasa Divisional Hospital, won the Best Sarong award during the Global Night at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.
The 22-year-old captivated the audience on Monday night at Subrail Park, Labasa, with a sarong that conveyed a story about organic farming rather than just serving as clothing. The sarong began with an elegant twist around the neck, signifying the start of a journey based on organic farming practices.
Adi Marica’s innovative showcase not only secured her top honors but also highlighted the importance of sustainable farming in an eye-catching way. The attaché from the pathology department of Labasa Divisional Hospital noted that the knot in the sarong represented a strong commitment to caring for the earth and promoting sustainable agriculture.
“After a rewarding day on the farm, the sarong transitions seamlessly into a stylish beach look with a knot below the bust,” Ms. Waqaniburotu explained, emphasizing how it encapsulates relaxed sophistication—ideal for enjoying the coastal breeze.
“My headpiece was crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, symbolizing the fruits and vegetables from the organic farm. I was in shock when I won; I nearly cried because all the other contestants also wore beautiful sarongs,” she shared.
“The sarong was crafted by my sister and me, demonstrating the unity of sisters, and ultimately, our hard work paid off,” she added.
Currently, she is in her final year at Fiji National University, where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. Adi Marica is originally from Makadru, Matuku, Lau, and has maternal ties to Taviya Village, Ovalau. Her advocacy focuses on revitalizing the North through organic farming.
“I firmly believe that organic farming is a key to a healthier and sustainable future, and I am very passionate about it,” she stated.
She is one of nine contestants competing for the Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North crown this coming Saturday.
