Crowning Compassion: Meet the Health Advocate of Miss Hibiscus 2023

Shyla Prasad, representing the Ministry of Health at this year’s Hibiscus Festival, emphasized that true wealth lies in happiness, health, and peace of mind. With a focus on promoting healthcare, she highlights the significance of addressing HIV and AIDS, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and mental health.

A dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist, Shyla was born in Labasa but grew up in Lautoka. She pursued her education at Natabua High School and later achieved her dream of studying in Suva by obtaining a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree from the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences. With three years of experience at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM), she is honored to represent her workplace on the Miss Hibiscus platform.

“My love for Suva grows stronger as I am privileged to work in Fiji’s largest and historical hospital,” Shyla said. The CWM, celebrating its 101st anniversary this year, was established to honor Fijians who served in World War I, adding to Shyla’s appreciation for Suva’s historical significance.

Outside of her medical career, Shyla enjoys sports, travel, and has a deep love for animals. Her hobbies include fishing, reading, and participating in various sports. Additionally, she is involved in community outreach through the Sai Prema Foundation at the Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Medical Centre and actively volunteers for the adoption and care of stray animals. Shyla aspires to open her own animal shelter in the future.

She is one of ten contestants competing for the title at the 68th Hibiscus Festival, scheduled to take place at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre from August 31 to September 7. This year’s festival, sponsored by FMF and Vodafone, promises to be a remarkable event showcasing the talents and commitments of Fiji’s finest.
