Seven contestants are set to compete for the Miss Nasinu Carnival crown in the upcoming fortnight. One of the contestants, Vinaina Marawa, is determined to focus on advocating against domestic violence within homes and communities throughout the carnival week.
Fiji has alarmingly high rates of violence against women, with statistics indicating that two-thirds of women in the country experience physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner during their lifetimes. Furthermore, 60 percent of women encounter difficulties at home due to a lack of support and various forms of abuse.
Representing the Nasinu Town Council, Ms. Marawa is not new to beauty pageants. At just 18 years old, she previously participated in the Hibiscus Festival Teen category. She sees her involvement in events like the Nasinu Carnival as a valuable opportunity to serve her community with dignity and respect.
“It’s not about the clothes or looks; it’s about representing our community,” Ms. Marawa stated. “During this carnival, I will prioritize advocacy and seeking national change, as I am eager to use my voice for this important cause.”
She believes that the journey of change begins at home. Reflecting on her upbringing as the eldest of eight siblings raised by a single mother, Ms. Marawa recognizes the significant responsibilities she had to manage. While balancing household chores with her studies proved challenging, her mother’s steadfast support made the experience fulfilling.
At this year’s Nasinu Carnival, Ms. Marawa intends to utilize the platform to advocate for meaningful change.
