Recent reports highlight a growing crisis of child abuse in Fiji, with at least three cases being reported each week, and one of those involving a child under the age of 12 occurring daily. Minister for Women, and Children, Sashi Kiran, made these alarming revelations during the Foundation for the Needy Children dinner in Suva.

Kiran pointed out that many of these children long for safer living environments, making the pursuit of viable solutions a significant challenge. She identified the escalating social issues in Fiji, notably family breakdown and the increasing prevalence of drugs, as contributing factors to the increase in school dropouts and a cycle of despair that affects these vulnerable children.

Emphasizing the importance of support, Kiran noted the pivotal role of both government and organizations like FENC Fiji in providing targeted assistance. She underscored that such efforts create life-changing opportunities for children in need. The commendable work of FENC Fiji in establishing Learning Centres helps keep children engaged and on track academically, particularly in marginalized and remote communities.

Kiran remarked, “The difference between a classroom and the streets is not intelligence or motivation, but a backpack, books, and a safe home.” Her comments reflect a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding child neglect and the pressing need for adequate support systems.

In light of earlier reports showing that around 72% of children in Fiji have experienced some form of violence, Kiran’s current heightening of awareness reinforces the urgent need for collective community efforts to protect and nurture the younger generation. In a hopeful tone, she assured the government’s commitment to fostering robust partnerships with civil society to address these pressing issues, aiming for a shared goal of creating safe spaces for all children.

As the Ministry ramps up its initiatives and educative programs, there lies a hopeful vision for a future where every child in Fiji can thrive in a safe and supportive environment, free from fear and harm.
