The traditional use of substances such as marijuana, alcohol, and kava has shifted towards the more perilous use of drugs like methamphetamine and cocaine, causing significant disruptions in family dynamics. Selina Kuruleca, the permanent secretary for the Ministry of Justice, highlighted the adverse effects these drugs have on familial structures, which traditionally serve as a protective barrier against such societal issues.

Speaking at a Rotary Club event in Labasa, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, raised alarming concerns about the involvement of parents who are leveraging their children to sell drugs and women being compelled into prostitution to support drug habits. Kuruleca emphasized that the breakdown of family units is a fundamental factor contributing to the current drug crisis and called for a targeted approach to rectify this situation.

Additionally, Kuruleca noted that the complications surrounding drug use are increasingly being recognized as mental health challenges. Reflecting on her previous role with the Ministry of Education, she reiterated a commitment to address drug-related issues. The Ministry of Education (MOE) has established a clear policy on Drugs and Substance Abuse, prioritizing the safeguarding of children from illicit drug use.

To combat these challenges, the MOE has deployed a network of four divisional counselors, 30 mentors, and 30 APTC-qualified counselors, along with partnerships with various NGOs, to ensure that comprehensive counseling services are available throughout Fiji’s nine educational districts. There is also significant involvement from faith leaders and school chaplains, who play an essential role in nurturing students’ spiritual and moral development through daily devotions and training in child protection and behavior management.

This multifaceted approach aims to offer broad support to students and mitigate the impact of substance abuse within families and communities, showcasing a hopeful commitment to building a healthier future for the youth.

Overall, while the challenges are significant, the proactive steps being taken by various ministries and community leaders highlight a commitment to fostering resilience and support within families and educational environments, paving the way for positive change.
