A swift response from Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government, has managed to defuse a potential lengthy protest spearheaded by the Ba Town Council (BTC) workers. On February 26, thirty-four members of the BTC General Workers Union staged a demonstration at the Ba Municipal Market, demanding the removal of acting chief executive officer, Moshim Khan, due to unresolved leadership concerns.
Union industrial relations officer, Satish Chandra, highlighted the workers’ dissatisfaction with Khan’s leadership style, stating that past discussions had not led to any constructive outcomes. He stressed the necessity of government intervention, noting that efforts to engage with Khan directly had been unsuccessful.
Despite the initial report from Ba Town Council’s special administrator, Yogesh Naidu, indicating no formal complaints from staff, he was open to waiting for a resolution from the minister.
Minister Nalumisa took action shortly after arriving in Ba at 5 PM, addressing the employees’ grievances and announcing the appointment of a new acting CEO to take effect from February 27. This development is seen as a pivotal move towards enhancing workplace relations and illustrates a responsive approach from local governance.
The prompt resolution reflects a commitment to effective service delivery within the community and has led to an agreement for the protesting workers to resume their duties. This positive outcome reinforces the potential for better communication and cooperation within local councils, promising a brighter future for both the employees and the residents of Ba.
