Nabua Primary School (NPS), located on the outskirts of Suva, is currently facing a crisis due to deteriorating infrastructure that jeopardizes the safety and education of its 900 students. The school’s poor conditions have raised concerns regarding the status of public educational facilities in urban areas of Fiji.
Ravu Dansey, the school manager, expressed grave worries about the campus’ dilapidated state, attributing the issue to a lack of funds that prevents essential repairs from being carried out. He highlighted the aging infrastructure and pointed out that while donations provide some immediate relief, they are insufficient to address the extensive needs, leaving the school in a precarious financial position. Visible signs of neglect include leaking roofs, cracked floors, rusted playground equipment, and overcrowded classrooms, where students struggle to hear over inefficient fans in stifling heat.
Despite these adversities, the students remain dedicated to their education, viewing it as a means to a brighter future. Mr. Dansey has called for support, noting that the school’s new management team is eager for change but requires additional resources.
In a recent acknowledgment, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro recognized the school’s declining conditions and emphasized the management’s responsibility to enhance the situation. He stated that the Ministry of Education is prepared to assist but urged NPS to take initiative in seeking help. Previous assistance, including an $80,000 grant from the Korean Embassy in 2022, has not markedly improved the situation, indicating a pressing need for more substantial intervention.
Humanitarian organizations have also raised alarms regarding the school’s conditions. Save the Children Fiji labeled the scenario “unacceptable,” emphasizing that it poses serious health and safety risks. The organization’s CEO, Shairana Ali, stated that every child deserves a safe learning environment and insisted on the urgent need for intervention from the government and local stakeholders.
The plight of Nabua Primary School underscores a national issue of crumbling infrastructure and overcrowded urban schools. As the government prepares its upcoming budget, prioritizing educational facilities has become critical for ensuring safe and conducive learning environments for students across the nation.
In summary, while Nabua Primary School faces overwhelming challenges, the community’s commitment to education and the call for support from government and humanitarian organizations highlight a pathway toward improvement. Engaging stakeholders effectively could lead to a revitalization of the school, ultimately benefiting both current and future generations of students.
