Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the Commissioner of Fiji Corrections, has been placed on leave as the Ministry of Justice opens an investigation into serious allegations concerning potential breaches and misconduct within the Fiji Corrections Service. Justice Minister Siromi Turaga stated that the allegations raise critical issues related to governance, security, and administration within the service, thereby necessitating an immediate probe.
The suspension of Commissioner Nakarawa has been implemented following agreement from the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Constitutional Offices Commission. During this investigation, Nakarawa will retain his full entitlements while on leave. In the interim, Deputy Commissioner Auta Moceisuva will assume the role of Acting Commissioner.
This situation comes amidst a backdrop of other commissioners within the Fiji Corrections Service facing legal challenges, including incarceration and ongoing criminal cases.
As this investigation unfolds, it presents an opportunity for the Fiji Corrections Service to address potential systemic issues and improve its governance and operational standards. Transparent investigations can pave the way for reform and enhanced accountability, fostering a stronger and more effective corrections system in Fiji.
