Criminal Fires Threaten Fiji’s Sugar Industry: Urgent Call to Action

The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a strong warning about the recent uptick in intentional fires in sugarcane fields, labeling these actions as both reckless and criminal. Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the CEO of SRIF, emphasized the significant harm these fires inflict not only on farmers but also on the entire sugarcane industry.

Dr. Kumar reiterated that setting sugarcane fields ablaze is a criminal act, carrying heavy penalties. He pointed out that SRIF has incurred considerable losses in essential research data due to these deliberate acts. This data, which is often collected over several months or even years, plays a vital role in fostering evidence-based improvements within the sugarcane sector.

He warned that just one incident of arson could obliterate valuable research in seconds, hindering progress and adversely affecting the future of the industry. Dr. Kumar stressed the importance of recognizing the severity of the situation, stating that such acts not only threaten farmers’ economic stability but also endanger the scientific research crucial for the industry’s sustainability and development.

The SRIF has urged the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. “By collaborating, we can safeguard our sugarcane fields, protect important research, and ensure the lasting success of our industry,” he added.
