Crime Surge: Theft and Assault Rates Soar in July 2024

The overall crime rate in July saw a significant rise, increasing by 52 percent compared to the same month last year, and escalating by 17 percent when compared to June. The surge was largely attributed to incidents of theft, assault, and burglary.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew reported that theft incidents in July 2024 totaled 635, compared to 327 cases in the same month last year. Notably, among these cases, three involved multiple counts of theft from a restaurant, supermarket, and foreign exchange outlet, with the total amount stolen exceeding half a million dollars, implicating six employees from these establishments.

Additionally, assault cases rose by 96, with 347 incidents recorded in July 2024, up from 251 in the same month last year. Alarmingly, 83 of these assault cases were related to domestic situations.
