The Fiji Police Force has indicated a concerning rise in crime rates for the month of November, with an overall increase of 19%. The statistics reveal a 10% uptick in serious crimes and a notable 22% rise in crimes specifically targeting women.
The Southern Division saw grim increases in both aggravated burglary and murder. In the Western Division, reports of burglary, robbery, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, and arson have also escalated. The Eastern Division experienced rises in burglary, aggravated robbery, and motor vehicle theft, while the Northern Division reported increases in motor vehicle theft and murder. The Central Division similarly saw spikes in rape, robbery, motor vehicle theft, and murder.
On a slightly positive note, the police reported that 45% of all theft cases recorded in November were resolved, alongside a 20% detection rate for burglary incidents. Aggravated robbery cases had a detection rate of 16%.
These statistics highlight the ongoing challenges Fiji faces in terms of crime, but the law enforcement’s efforts in resolving a significant number of reported theft cases suggest a commitment to improving community safety. There is hope that with enhanced policing strategies and community collaboration, crime rates may stabilize or decrease in the coming months.
