The Fiji Police Force has announced a concerning 19% rise in crime rates for November. In their report, they indicated that serious crimes overall increased by 10%, with crimes specifically against women seeing a notable surge of 22%.
The Southern Division experienced alarming upticks in aggravated burglary and murder cases. Meanwhile, the Western Division faced increases across several crime categories, including burglary, robbery, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, and arson.
In the Eastern Division, there was also an uptick in burglary, aggravated robbery, and motor vehicle theft. Notably, the Northern Division reported increases in motor vehicle theft and murders, while the Central Division saw rises in rape, robbery, motor vehicle theft, and murder.
Despite these increases, there is a silver lining: the police reported that 45% of theft cases were resolved, with a detection rate of 20% for burglary incidents. Aggravated robbery cases were detected at a rate of 16% during the month.
This report underscores the need for ongoing community efforts and vigilance to combat crime effectively. It also highlights the importance of law enforcement responding to these trends, fostering community engagement, and ensuring a safer environment for all residents.
As the police continue their work, it is hoped that increased awareness and proactive measures can lead to a reduction in crime rates in the future.
