The Fiji Police Force has announced a significant rise in crime rates for November, reporting an overall increase of 19%. The data reveals that serious crimes have risen by 10%, with notable increases in crimes against women, which have surged by 22%.
Breaking it down by region, the Southern Division has experienced spikes in aggravated burglary and murder incidents. Meanwhile, the Western Division has reported increases across several categories, including burglary, robbery, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, and arson. In the Eastern Division, there has been a rise in burglary, aggravated robbery, and motor vehicle theft. The Northern Division has similarly reported increases in motor vehicle theft and murder, while the Central Division has seen rises in rape, robbery, motor vehicle theft, and murder.
Despite these alarming trends, the police have successfully detected 45% of theft cases reported in November, and there has been a 20% detection rate for burglary cases. Aggravated robbery cases were detected at a rate of 16% during the same period.
While the statistics are concerning, they also highlight the police force’s commitment to tackling these issues and the efficacy of law enforcement efforts in detecting crimes. There is hope that with continued attention to these trends and initiatives aimed at reducing crime, safety can be restored in these communities.
By staying informed and supporting community policing efforts, residents can contribute to the collective fight against crime in Fiji.
