Cricket Fiji has enlisted Sanjiv Dubey, an Australian high-performance coach, to spearhead a short-term training camp for the national Under-19 team as they gear up for the East Asia Pacific World Cup qualifiers taking place in Japan this April. The training camp commenced at Albert Park in Suva on January 8 and will conclude on January 25, 2025.
This initiative marks Dubey’s third year working with Cricket Fiji, during which he has consistently emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to player development. In discussions with SUNsports, he remarked on the significance of improving the players’ core skills through rigorous training sessions, which are supported by local coaches. He stated, “We need to invest time and effort into our development if we want to advance beyond just participating in tournaments.”
Dubey expressed admiration for the young athletes he is coaching, highlighting their humility and eagerness to learn, which creates a vibrant training environment. He is committed to nurturing the players’ skills to help them perform to professional standards in international competitions, emphasizing that this skill development process is gradual but crucial.
Additionally, the training camp promotes inclusivity by welcoming female players who are currently engaged in the 2024/25 Women’s T20 League competition. This step reflects Cricket Fiji’s dedication to diversity and creating opportunities for all aspiring cricketers.
Overall, Dubey’s training initiative not only aims to prepare the Under-19 team for immediate challenges but also seeks to elevate Fiji’s cricket profile on the global stage. By focusing on skill development and fostering a supportive environment, Cricket Fiji is laying the groundwork for a promising future in cricket. This effort is a significant investment in the region’s cricketing landscape, aiming to inspire excellence and inclusivity among young talent.
