Cricket Fiji has appointed Australian high-performance coach Sanjiv Dubey to lead a short-term training camp for the national Under-19 team. This initiative is aimed at preparing the team for the upcoming East Asia Pacific World Cup qualifiers, scheduled to occur in Japan this April. The camp began on January 8 at Albert Park in Suva and will run until January 25.

Dubey, who is in his third year with Cricket Fiji, emphasized a comprehensive skill development approach during the training sessions, which also involve local coaching support. In discussions with SUNsports, he underscored the importance of thorough groundwork and strategic planning in order to enhance Cricket Fiji’s reputation in international cricket. He remarked, “We need to invest time and effort into our development if we want to advance beyond just participating in tournaments.”

The training camp’s primary focus is on improving the players’ core skills, a process Dubey described as gradual but essential for achieving professional-level performance in international competitions. He expressed confidence in the youth players, appreciating their character and eagerness to learn, and reflected on the enriching experience of working with such humble individuals.

In a noteworthy step towards inclusivity, Dubey’s training camp also welcomes female players currently engaged in the 2024/25 Women’s T20 League competition.

Overall, this initiative reflects a commitment to nurturing young talent in Fiji and enhancing the country’s cricket profile on the global stage. By fostering an inclusive and supportive environment alongside focused skill development, Cricket Fiji is laying a strong foundation for a promising future in the sport. This effort not only aims to prepare the Under-19 team for imminent challenges but also seeks to elevate the standards of cricket across the nation, creating new possibilities for aspiring cricketers.
