Cricket Fiji has engaged Australian high-performance coach Sanjiv Dubey for a short-term training camp aimed at preparing the national Under-19 team for the forthcoming East Asia Pacific World Cup qualifiers scheduled in Japan this April. The camp commenced on January 8 at Albert Park in Suva and will run until January 25, 2025.

In his third year with Cricket Fiji, Dubey is focused on enhancing the players’ core skills through comprehensive training sessions that also involve local coaches. He emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to player development and the necessity of conducting thorough groundwork to elevate Cricket Fiji’s profile on the international stage. In an interview with SUNsports, Dubey stated, “We need to invest time and effort into our development if we want to advance beyond just participating in tournaments.”

The initiative also promotes inclusivity, as the training camp is open to female players currently competing in the 2024/25 Women’s T20 League competition. This not only highlights Cricket Fiji’s commitment to diversity but also fosters a supportive environment for young athletes.

Dubey expressed admiration for the character and eagerness to learn displayed by the young cricketers, describing the training experience as enriching. He is optimistic about the gradual skill development process and aims to see the players perform with professionalism at the international level.

This initiative represents a significant step towards nurturing cricket talent in Fiji, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to fostering excellence in the sport. By focusing on skill development and inclusivity, Cricket Fiji is working towards a brighter future for cricket, paving the way for aspiring cricketers to shine on the global stage.
