Cricket Fiji is gearing up for a significant year in 2026, as both the national under-19 girls’ team and the senior men’s team prepare to participate in major competitions. The under-19 girls will take part in a world cup qualifier hosted by Papua New Guinea, marking their second appearance in this prestigious tournament. Siti Rokoro, the CEO of Cricket Fiji, emphasized the importance of this event, noting that a total of five to six teams are anticipated to compete, with the top team securing direct qualification for the 2027 World Cup.

Preparation for the under-19 girls’ team began in November, with the final squad expected to be announced in March of next year. As part of their training regimen, Cricket Fiji has been conducting clinics and has launched a women’s league at Albert Park. Most of the players involved are under-19, and they will participate in a national trial on January 14 to help determine the national training squad. Selection will involve players from secondary schools in Suva and Nadi.

On the other hand, the senior men’s team faces a challenging road ahead. They will participate in a new competition format proposed by the ICC. The men’s qualifier, set to take place in Japan with eight teams vying for a spot, will see the winner advance to a global qualifier, ultimately leading to the World Cup.

Both teams are under the guidance of local coaches, and there is optimism that a new national coach from India will arrive in time to provide valuable technical advice before the teams head to their respective qualifiers. This preparation reflects Cricket Fiji’s commitment to enhancing their teams’ performance on the international stage, offering a hopeful outlook for future tournaments.
