Cricket Fiji has engaged Sanjiv Dubey for a short-term contract to lead a training camp for the national Under-19 team as they prepare for the East Asia Pacific World Cup qualifiers scheduled to take place in Japan this April. Dubey, a high-performance coach from Australia, is set to enhance the skills and performance of young cricketers through comprehensive training sessions, which are supported by local coaches.
In an interview with SUNsports, Dubey emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to improving the players’ game and enhancing Cricket Fiji’s stature in international cricket. He stated, “We are in the process of doing a lot of homework beyond international tournaments; this is part of our development strategy.”
Dubey is in his third year with Cricket Fiji, and he shared that working with these young athletes has been a rewarding experience. “The energy and the learning are at the highest level when one works with good, humble, and simple people,” he noted.
The training camp, which commenced yesterday at Albert Park in Suva, is scheduled to wrap up on January 25. Dubey’s primary focus is on developing the core skills of the players, which he acknowledges is a gradual process: “It’s a slow and long process, but if we follow that then we’ll get where we want to be,” he expressed. His goal is to refine the players’ techniques so they perform with professionalism on the international stage.
Importantly, the training camp is also open to female players who are participating in the 2024/25 Women’s T20 League competition, further promoting inclusivity within the sport.
