Cricket Fiji has engaged Australian high-performance coach Sanjiv Dubey for a short-term training camp aimed at preparing the national Under-19 team for the upcoming East Asia Pacific World Cup qualifiers scheduled in Japan this April. The camp kicked off on January 8 at Albert Park in Suva and is set to conclude on January 25, 2025.

This initiative marks Dubey’s third year with Cricket Fiji, where he has emphasized a comprehensive approach to enhance players’ skills through rigorous training sessions, supported by local coaches. In discussions with SUNsports, Dubey highlighted the importance of improving not only the players’ abilities but also enhancing Cricket Fiji’s standing in the international cricket arena. He remarked, “We need to invest time and effort into our development if we want to advance beyond just participating in tournaments.”

The training camp focuses on developing core skills, which Dubey acknowledges as a gradual process: “It’s slow and long, but if we follow that then we’ll get where we want to be.” He expressed optimism about the trainees, aspiring for them to play professionally when they compete internationally.

Moreover, the training camp promotes inclusivity by extending invitations to female players currently involved in the 2024/25 Women’s T20 League competition. This commitment to diversity highlights Cricket Fiji’s intent to foster a supportive environment for all aspiring cricketers.

Overall, Dubey’s training initiative not only looks to prepare the Under-19 team for immediate challenges but also aims to uplift and broaden the reach of cricket in Fiji, paving the way for a promising future in the sport. The combination of skilled coaching and an inclusive approach bodes well for developing young talent and enhancing Fiji’s profile in international cricket.
