VERA Sapozhnikova, a familiar face at Suva’s ROC Markets, is showcasing her vibrant creations at the MSME Festive Market, which wraps up today at the Civic Centre Car Park in Suva. Originally from Russia, she has made Fiji her home since arriving in 2006.
Ms. Sapozhnikova initially came to Fiji as a Christian missionary and dedicated many years to teaching the Bible in local churches. Now retired, she has found a new passion in crafting eye-catching hand-painted decorative items, which she has been selling for the past five years. Her artistry includes transforming discarded bottles and plates through an intricate eight-stage acrylic hand-painting process.
Despite her artistic endeavors, she emphasizes that her designs stem from her personal creativity and not her Russian heritage. “It’s not Russian and is not in Russian style. It’s my own style,” she said, underlining that the uniqueness of her art reflects her individual expression.
With prices ranging from $25 to $75, her pieces are affordable yet distinctive additions to home decor. Ms. Sapozhnikova, who has two sons living in Russia and a late husband, enjoys a peaceful life in Nausori and continues to share her heartfelt designs with the Fiji community.
This story highlights how artistic expression can flourish from personal experiences. It serves as a reminder that creativity knows no borders, and that individuals can find fulfillment and joy in pursuing what they love, no matter where they are in the world.
In summary, Vera Sapozhnikova’s journey from a missionary to a successful artist underscores the theme of reinvention and the pursuit of passion, proving that it’s never too late to explore new avenues in life.
