The ongoing construction of the new Savusavu market, valued at $6.2 million, has raised concerns after cracks were reported on the ground floor of this two-storey municipal facility, stirring anxiety about potential structural defects. Sources close to the project expressed worries regarding the long-term implications of these cracks, emphasizing the necessity for immediate attention.

Despite these concerns, Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has reassured the public, stating that according to the project’s lead consultant, the cracks are not indicative of structural deficiencies. Nalumisa emphasized that the project, which involves Chand Engineering Consultants Ltd as the lead consultant and Jenns Construction Ltd as the main contractor, is progressing as planned, albeit behind schedule.

Experts in engineering, who requested confidentiality, indicated that cracks in concrete can stem from various issues, including material or design defects. If not managed properly, such cracks can worsen over time, particularly if water infiltration occurs, potentially destabilizing the building’s foundation.

While Mr. Abhinesh Chand, the lead consultant, declined to comment directly on the matter, he referred inquiries to the Savusavu Town Council, which oversees project management. Both Shiu Sharma, special administrator of the Savusavu Town Council, and Nilesh Chand, the acting CEO, concurred that the cracks are primarily superficial.

Contrary to earlier reports that inaccurately stated the project’s cost as $1 million, Mr. Chetty, the main contractor, clarified that the materials alone, such as steel, accounted for approximately $1.2 million of the budget. The project, initially slated for opening in April 2025, is now expected to be completed by May 9, 2025.

The Savusavu market aims to provide a vibrant space for 180 to 200 vendors, including various small and medium enterprises. Originally announced by former Minister Premila Kumar, the market plans to house coffee shops, a handicraft center, and user-friendly elevators for individuals with disabilities, showcasing a commitment to supporting local entrepreneurs.

Despite the challenges encountered, the successful completion of this market holds the promise of revitalizing the local economy and fostering community pride. It stands as a testament to the government’s intention to improve municipal infrastructure, which is crucial for the development of local markets and the empowerment of vendors.

Ultimately, the ongoing efforts to address issues within the construction process not only aim to solidify investor and public confidence but also reflect a community-oriented approach that prioritizes economic growth and resilience.
