Cracking Down on Road Safety: LTA Takes Strict Actions

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken action against numerous drivers, counselling 58 of them, issuing 1,206 warning letters, suspending 13 licenses, and canceling 112 licenses from August 1, 2023, to June 1, 2024.

Despite a reduction in road fatalities as of July 11, 2024, with 29 deaths compared to 51 during the same period last year, LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa indicated that there is still an alarming trend in the causes of road accidents.

Rokosawa highlighted that speeding remains the leading cause of accidents and fatalities, followed by drink driving and driver fatigue. He also noted that incidents involving pedestrians at fault and hit-and-run cases are “areas of significant concern.”

“The LTA is committed to addressing these issues through stringent enforcement, comprehensive monitoring, and ongoing road safety awareness campaigns,” he stated.

“In July, the Authority and the Fiji Police Force launched a special awareness operation to raise awareness about the dangers of jaywalking and to encourage responsible behavior among pedestrians.”
