“Cracking Down: Fijian Authorities Target ‘Big Fish’”

Fijian authorities are focusing on key figures involved in the illicit drug trade in Fiji. Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua discussed the issue on The Lens@177 and highlighted that some significant arrests were made in Nadi. He used a metaphor, saying, “Clouds have to gather before rain falls so hopefully, no strong wind blows in between and they run away,” to describe the situation.

Tikoduadua mentioned that some raids were unsuccessful due to suspects being tipped off, but assured that the police are monitoring potential offenders.

He emphasized the importance of following the rule of law in Fiji, distinguishing the country from dictatorial regimes. “We have a rule-based order, and even when dealing with such people, we must act within the law,” he said.

The minister urged various community segments to contribute to the fight against drug trade, calling on parents, churches, traditional leaders (Turaga ni vanua), and the government to play their parts.

“We’re not losing the fight. As long as we are breathing, this fight is not over. I’ve admitted you are never going to completely get rid of it, but you can manage it, and it has to start from home,” he remarked, emphasizing collective responsibility.
