Fijian authorities are closely monitoring key individuals involved in the illicit drug trade in the country. Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua revealed during a segment on The Lens@177 that several significant arrests have already been made, particularly in Nadi.
“Clouds have to gather before rain falls, so hopefully, no strong wind blows in between and they run away,” he remarked, indicating the need for careful planning before actions are taken against these individuals.
Despite some unsuccessful raids due to tip-offs, Tikoduadua emphasized that the police have good intelligence on these high-profile targets. He stressed that these individuals are under surveillance, sending a clear warning that authorities are aware of their activities.
He also praised the adherence to the rule of law in Fiji, distancing the country from being a “second-tier dictatorship.” Tikoduadua reaffirmed that even when dealing with criminals, the law must be followed.
“We want to make them know that we have got them on our radar,” he said, further stating that the fight against drug trafficking is ongoing and will persist as long as there is breath in their bodies. He acknowledged that completely eradicating the drug trade may not be possible, but it can be managed starting from the home.
He urged parents, religious institutions, community leaders, and the government to collectively tackle the problem. “We can’t do it independently of ourselves,” he concluded.
