Reports indicate that there has been a troubling trend of individuals attempting to throw illegal substances over the fences of correctional facilities across the nation. The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has released statements highlighting incidents where items such as marijuana, methamphetamine, mobile phones, and tobacco were tossed into the Suva Remand Centre.
Between January 3 and 5, 2025, FCS officers prevented two separate attempts to smuggle these items, leading to one arrest by the police for further investigation. The FCS has urged the public to refrain from such actions, as they pose significant health risks to inmates and legal repercussions for those involved.
Acting Commissioner of Corrections Auta Moceisuva emphasized the importance of supporting prisoners’ rehabilitation efforts rather than impeding their progress. He has called on the community to collaborate with the corrections system in combating drug use and fostering positive behavioral changes among inmates.
This situation serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility we have in supporting rehabilitation programs and combating drug-related issues in society. With continued awareness and community effort, there is hope that the detrimental effects of illegal substances can be mitigated, ultimately leading to a healthier society.
In summary, as more cases of smuggling contrabands into correctional facilities are reported, authorities stress the need for community support in rehabilitation initiatives and the urgent call for the public to avoid actions that may undermine these efforts.
