A 24-year-old man has received a sentence of 15 years and 10 months in prison for the sexual assault of his 11-year-old cousin. The ruling was made by High Court Judge Justice Sunil Sharma, who also established a non-parole period of 11 years for the offender.
The crime took place while the victim was asleep in the living room of a residence located in the Western Division. After the victim disclosed the incident to her mother, it was subsequently reported to the authorities. The suspect was quickly apprehended, formally interviewed, and charged.
During the sentencing on May 10 in Lautoka, Justice Sharma expressed concern over the rising instances of sexual offenses, describing the trend as a troubling reflection of societal issues. The defense advocated for leniency, highlighting that the accused is unmarried, works as a farmer and part-time tile layer, and is a first-time offender. Additionally, the court mandated a permanent non-molestation and non-contact order to ensure the victim’s safety.
This case underscores the importance of taking decisive action against sexual violence and highlights the need for ongoing community awareness and prevention efforts. While the situation is tragic, justice has been served, and measures are in place to protect the victim moving forward.
This case serves as a reminder of the critical need for vigilance in safeguarding the vulnerable, and it is hoped that increased awareness and preventive measures will lead to a safer environment for all.
