The Lautoka High Court is set to announce its decision tomorrow regarding the state’s request to destroy 4.1 tonnes of methamphetamine that was seized in Nadi last December.
During a recent court appearance, individuals including Justin Ho, David Heritage, Louie Logaivau, Jale Aukerea, Sakiusa Tuva, Keanie Mcpherson, Ratu Aporosa Davelevu, Ratu Osea Levula, Cathy Tuirabe, and Viliame Colawaliku faced Justice Aruna Aluthge. The court is currently awaiting a destruction plan from the State, which is necessary for the ruling to take place.
Additionally, the court has instructed both the State and the Defence to resolve pre-trial matters by January 31, 2025. Furthermore, dates for the Voir dire hearing and trial have been established, running from April 21 to May 23, 2025.
Bail has been granted to all defendants except for Cathy Tuirabe and Viliame Colawaliku, who are currently on a bench warrant for failing to appear. Authorities are actively searching for these two individuals. The court has also enforced a curfew from 6 pm to 6 am for Justin Ho, Louie Logaivau, and Jale Aukerea as a condition of their bail.
The accused are facing serious charges related to the unlawful importation and possession of illicit drugs, as well as possession of property believed to be proceeds from criminal activity. The case has been adjourned until tomorrow for a ruling.
In conclusion, this ongoing case highlights the judicial system’s efforts to address the serious issue of drug trafficking, while maintaining fair legal processes for the accused. The anticipated ruling may set a significant precedent in the handling of drug-related offenses in the region, reinforcing the commitment to combat illicit drugs.
