Veronica Malani’s legal representative, Sitiveni Raikanikoda, has been granted a 14-day period to submit their affidavit in response to a strike-out application made by Neelraj Sharma, a former lawyer for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The civil case was presented before Justice Usaia Ratuvili at the High Court in Suva, focusing on a compensation claim of $800,244 million involving 11 individuals linked to the investigation of the alleged 1987 bombing case in 2020.

The defendants include several former and current members of the Fiji Police Force as well as the DPP. During the hearing, Ronald Singh, representing Mr. Sharma, informed the court of their application to remove his client from the case. He highlighted that Mr. Sharma, once a DPP lawyer, is now employed by Munroe Leys Lawyers.

Justice Ratuvili instructed Mr. Raikanikoda to address the application and determine if he possesses any evidence regarding his client’s involvement. Additionally, Mr. Raikanikoda raised concerns about the absence of legal representation for two defendants, both of whom are retired civil servants, including former Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu and retired Assistant Police Commissioner Biu Matavou.

Justice Ratuvili indicated that the Office of the Attorney-General would need to provide an explanation regarding their representation at the next hearing. The case has been adjourned until October 9 for further mention.
