A former sex worker, Josevata Werelagi, had his appeal against a 14-year prison sentence dismissed by the Court of Appeal. The ruling was delivered by Justices Chandana Prematilaka, Karen Clark, and Gerald Winter following a hearing in November of the previous year.

In 2019, Werelagi was found guilty on charges related to the exploitation of a 15-year-old girl, including aggravated sexual servitude and multiple counts of domestic trafficking in children. The court records revealed that he first encountered the victim in Nausori in July 2015, when she was leaving school and living with her mother.

The case details recount how Werelagi arranged for the girl’s transportation to Samabula and introduced her to the sex industry, where she engaged in sexual activities with multiple men for payment. Following these incidents, she was lodged at his residence until rescued by the police a few days later. The court also noted that Werelagi had repeated this pattern of behavior on multiple occasions, grooming the girl to appear older.

This decision highlights the ongoing legal efforts to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable individuals. It serves as a reminder of the judicial system’s role in addressing such serious crimes and the importance of safeguarding the rights of minors. Despite the severity of the case, the judicial system is stepping up to ensure accountability, contributing to the broader fight against exploitation.

In essence, justice appears to be served in this case, reinforcing the commitment to uphold the law and protect the most vulnerable in society.
