A former sex worker, Josevata Werelagi, has had his appeal rejected after being sentenced to 14 years for his involvement in the trafficking of a 15-year-old girl. The decision was made by Justices Chandana Prematilaka, Karen Clark, and Gerald Winter at the Court of Appeal last November.

Werelagi was found guilty in late 2019 on several charges, including aggravated sexual servitude, domestic trafficking of minors, and for engaging minors under the age of 18. Court documents revealed that he met the victim in Nausori in July 2015, during a time when she was living with her mother after dropping out of school.

The incidents began when Werelagi arranged transportation for the girl from Nausori to Samabula, introducing her to the sex trade. On her first night, she was forced to engage in sexual acts with two men, with the proceeds being split between them. Following these encounters, the girl was taken to Werelagi’s home, where she remained until her rescue by the police on July 23, 2015. The court also learned that Werelagi had taken her to Samabula on multiple occasions, grooming her to appear older.

While the case is tragic and speaks to persistent issues of trafficking and exploitation of minors, it serves as a reminder of the legal system’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals. The court’s determination to uphold the conviction highlights the importance of addressing and combating such crimes in society.

In summary, Werelagi’s appeal was dismissed, reinforcing judicial efforts to protect children from exploitation and serve justice in grave offenses against minors. This case underlines the critical need for awareness and action against trafficking, ensuring that such egregious acts are met with appropriate legal consequences.
